Hi Ronnie,

The ICB exam is done directly from the HMRC literature / website.

If it's general taxation texts that your interested in then there's the AAT level III tax modules, ATT qualification, IAB tax papers, ACCA papers F6 and P6.

Specifically just for self assessment though it would just be the ICB one.

Hi,

If you do mean the ICB self assessment course, then you have to register as an agent (see the other thread) with the HMRC and then when you receive it you can phone up the order line and they will issue you with the tax return guide or 'big book' as they call it. Then you just need to familiarise yourself with it and order the exam through the ICB.

Obviously if you have not done self assessment or any tax before then you may need other training and maybe experience before you can do it. Unfortunately ICBs training providers do not at present offer any courses so maybe the texts suggested by Sean will be helpful.

I've been having a look at the IAB Qualification in personal and business tax. Has anyone had any experience of this? Is it a worthwhile qualification?

As regards the ICB exam - it is home based and I've read if you make a couple of small mistakes then it is returned to you for a second (and maybe even third chance). What happens if you still fail? I assume you have to pay for another exam - but how many times can you pay for another exam or do they tell you, give up - you're useless?

Dont forget you local tax office runs traing courses on how to complete SA's (& they are free).

I completed the ICB self assessment course. It was OK. You need to obtain 100% to pass. Made a small mistake, put an amount in the wrong box, they returned it for me to amend then I passed.

Don't you think that it's a bit silly that you have to pass the ICB self assessment exam before you can do self assessments for clients, yet I can submit my own when I'm ready.

Sorry still not too happy with the ICB after my exam results have still not been published.

Thought I would update you all in case those of you attempting to get your hands on 'the big book' come across the same thing.

I phoned the orderline which appears to be the only way of ordering it (tel 0845 900 0404).

I gave them my order reference and they said that they can not give me a timescale as to when I will receive it as it is sent out straight from the printers. I said I ordered it 2 weeks ago and that I was told it would arrive in 10 -14 days but she said give it another 2 weeks and then ring again. Aaaaaarrrrrrrgggg!!! This is so frustrating!!!
