Sole trader responsibility for PAYE when taking on new business?

Hope someone can help? My dad has just received a letter from HMRC stating that he underpaid his PAYE for his employees by 2k in the tax year 95/96! He bought the business (Goodwill etc) as a sole trader in the December of 1995, he has checked his records and thinks he has paid correctly (luckily he still has them although slightly mouldy from the garage!) I have not checked them with my limited payroll knowledge but wonder could he be liable for any previous tax not paid? He no longer owns the business it shut down years ago.

Any help urgently required before a call to HMRC in the morning??

Thanks Pamela

Hi Pamela

I'm no tax expert but I was under the impression that 12 years was the limit for back tax unless, statute of limitations being 6 years although for tax evasion is not time barred. Stands back and waits to be proved wrong!!!!
