Hi everyone,

just a quick post to say hello. I've been doing bookkeeping and telephone answering services for a couple of years now but only just found your forum. I really like the unstuffiness of it and hopefully I'll be able to contribute in some way from time to time.

Hi Rob,

Welcome to our merry little group. Always good to have new posters.

Are you a member of any supervisory bodies? Any thoughts on training providers?

We seem to have various factions on here with a growing membership of the Anti ICB League.

Amongst the members we've got plenty of ICB, IAB, AAT and a growing contingent of ACCA. There's also plenty of qualified by experience. But any CAT or CIMA members seem to have been keeping quiet for now.

Ooh, just started snowing here in Cannock as well....

Anyway, as I say, welcome to the site.

Hi Shaun,

thanks for the welcome.

I part qualified with CIMA many many years ago when I worked in industry. I looked at ICB and I am pondering whether to just take the exams without any formal studying, just a brush up on certain areas. I am fairly proficient on Sage Line 50 and Sage Payroll so I feel that the computerised side should be ok or maybe I will look at CAT as I feel it would offer more kudos. Having said all that, I have never been asked whether I am a qualified bookkeeper so as long as I do a good job maybe that is all that is important!

How about you Shaun, are you affiliated with any body?

Just checked my car, there must be two inches of snow on the roof now!

Hi Rob,

ACCA and ICB.

I would highly recommend the former despite the ridiculous restrictions put on PQ members until fully qualified.

ICB are going through a transition period at the moment and whilst they are becoming more professional they seem to be doing so without any real regard for their existing practicing members.

CAT is an excellent call but going back to what I was saying about ACCA above, if you pass CAT with the ACCA you can prepare accounts and offer tax advice but if you then decide to progress and use your CAT qualification to gain exemptions from the first three ACCA papers as soon as you become a professional stream ACCA student you are no longer regarded as being qualified to prepare accounts or offer tax advice!

Sounds as though you would sail through the levels I and II if that was the way that you decided to go. However, if you want the ICB practicing certificate for MLR you now need to pass both computerised and manual at level II to become an associate member.

Snows still not settling here but my sons already digging out his sledge!

Thanks Zoe, everyone seems so welcoming!

Hi Shaun, I cannot see myself having time to study for ACCA, I have a few ACCA contacts locally and if I get a Limited company client I do the bookkeeping and 'sub out' the final accounts to one of the qualifieds! But I will check out CAT properly.

Coventry definitely has more snow than Vancouver!
