Can Paying for an exam count as expenses??..

Hi Everyone,

Just wondering can I claim paying for a Payroll exam as expenses???  Would this be classed as continuous learning???  Its only £41, but if claimable then I would claim it as will then help to reduce next years Tax bill!!!

Used to do Computerised Payroll but decided to learn the Manual side before I offer these services along with the bookkeeping, so I suppose it could be class as continuous developing?

Any view are always welcome, as don't want to claim if not allowed too.

Evening Amanda,

Good question.

This is a bit different to the normal questions related to whether one can put through bookkeeping exams as an expense as that comes under the category of learning something new rather than enhancing existing skills.

You can't claim for learning new things but this is giving legitimacy to a service being offered as part of your ongoing business. For that reason this is more akin to CPD and as such I would put it through the business and also put through the cost of the upgrade to your ICB membership when you have the additional letters after your name.

I also believe the same rules would apply to the self assessment exam as well.

By the time it's time to do the self assessment again you will have evidenced the expenditure by income that would not have been available had you not done the exam.

Hi shaun,

Thanks for the reply, I thought it should go down as an expense, as its not a new trade I'm learning but enhancing my skills.

Its nice to know what other people think as wouldn't like to get my own wrong!

You can tell I do my own books on a Sunday night, what a sad muppet I am!!! Everyone elses comes first and mine is last as usual.
