employed income and self employed income

If you were doing a 08/09 tax return for a s/e person, who was employed at the beginnig of the tax year then went on to self employed work a couple of months later.

Would you deduct the tax paid from employment work against the s/e income tax????
but I take it you would only look at that tax year 08/09 and you wouldn't go into the previous tax yr (07/08) at all.

Please could someone clarify for me!

on the tax return, you have a section for employments, which you would enter his employment details and a section for self employment, which you would enter here so long as the year end was not after 05/04/09.

the gross employment is added to the profit from self employment, then the tax paid in employment is deducted and the result is the tax to be paid.

hi P
you say as long as it isn't tax for the year after 5th apr 09, what about prior to april 6th
08 I believe you wouldn't go prior either, is this correct?

Hi Lor,

No you wouldn't go back further than that. You should be able to take the figures from the P60 issued by the employer.

you wont get a P60 if the person left employment within the tax year - use the P45 information which will give the gross and tax figures.
