Moving to a new area


Hi
I am hoping to move near Banbury in several months and I would like to know how best to get new clients, I have heard postcard advertising is good, if so has anyone got a free sample they could send me please.  Also how is best to approach accountants to increase my client base?  I am an experienced bookkeeper and proficient in many accounting packages including Sage, Tas Books & QuickBooks and I can sort out 'problem' accounts.

In addition to what's on that blog...

I am sure there are lots of good methods to advertise and promote your bookkeeping service, and I've seen a few mentioned in posts here.

Postcards and direct mail can be ok though the actual response rate can be fair low at usually a couple of percent at best.  Targeted marketing can cost a touch less (save print costs, and mailing) depending on how it's done though in order to get a good response it will require more time and follow up with calls etc.

Whichever of those options - I think it can help to focus on a specific need.  It may be record keeping ease, knowing true financial position with regular reports or cash flow management, having a smooth stress-free year end, or as you mentioned - cleaning up those messy problematic records.

You mentioned accountants.  Accountants can be a good source of work but don't expect them to respond quickly to just a letter.  Usually they will need confidence in service quality (first issue), and following that is usually establishing a relationship and of course rates.

You might be able to include testimonials from other accountants you have worked alongside which can help with the confidence.

Relationships are not instantly formed, but if you show you are seeking to establish a 2-way business relationship where you will also send your client statutory accounts/tax work in their direction it will probably help build some interest.

Also... get involved in your new area. Look at networking events, meet with the local business banking managers, talk with business owners/managers when you pop into places, become a part of the local (business) community!

Many thanks for your reply. I'm not very keen on networking if it means standing up in front of lots of people talking about bookkeeping! Anyway it's been very helpful to listen to your advice and I'm sure it's going to be hard work whatever I decide to do. I'm in the process of joining The Bookkeepers Association which may help.
