I am a teacher. I wish to give up teaching next year. One option I have considered is to do bookkeeping. I want to do a comprehensive computerised bookkeeping course online  without necessarily getting a qualification. Is this a good idea? Years ago I did manual bookkeeping (Pitmans)
 Has anybody got a set of coursework books for me to have a look at before i embark. I am willing to pay or donate money to a charity if need be?
Besides Sage Line 50 and Quick Book and without paying the earth, whcih software do I use? I have  a copy of Adminsoft software it looks good and easy to use, but then I am an amateur. Has anybody got any experience of this software. I have not tried it out comprehensively and I have a some problems due to ignorance rather than the software.

Welcome to The Book-keepers Forum!

No qualifications are required to set up your own book-keeping business, but if you can find a practical based course of study then so much the better. When it comes to software Sage really is the market leader, but there are other, slightly cheaper alternatives out there too. The ones that spring to mind are VT Transaction which is free, Kash Flow, MS Office Accounting (again free to download) and other spreadsheet based versions. Try downloading one and play around with it. Some come with dummy businesses installed so you can play around with the settings and practice posting on invoices etc.

I've never used Adminsoft myself but they're all based on the same principles so if your comfortable using that one go with it. Clients don't really care what you use as long as your work is accurate and your rates are cost effective.
