Which Gateway ID to use?!

Hi all,

I am registered with HMRC for AML supervision and have a Government Gateway ID for that.

 

Years ago I was self-employed in a different industry but closed that business and thought no more of it. When I tried to register my bookkeeping business for self-assessment it was flagged up that I already had a UTR and Gateway ID.

 

So now I'm trying to find out which of these do I use to register as an agent to file client self-assessments? Or do I need a third login?!

 

I've hunted through the threads on here, the HMRC info pages and sat trying to speak to an advisor but am having no joy.

 

Any help/point in the right direction would be much appreciated.

You need to write to HMRC to be an agent, you can not do this online, they will then send you a code for each tax that you have applied for and then you can file clients tax returns.

Thanks for the reply. I finally managed to find my tax profile which has my PAYE and previous self-assessment returns.

The old Gateway ID turns out to BE an agent login (previously had an accountant do my returns for me so that's where that came from).

I'm going to have to phone them again and speak to someone. They really don't make it easy do they!

No, this agent account that I'm talking about must have been created back when I was previously self-employed but as I'd never logged into it myself until this year I didn't even know it existed. I didn't know whether having separate logins for AML and this account would mess anything up.

Do you think I'm best just applying in writing for a new agent account?

At the moment I'm going to fill in the CWF1 form to re-open my personal self-assessment details and register my bookkeeping business.
