Use of home allowance

Hi ,

I wonder if anyone can help please. I know that HMRC have stated that use of home @ £26 per month can be claimed for employees for the year, however can it still be claimed for part of the year. For example, the employer paid employees £26 per month from May-July, but now it has stopped, but the majority of employees still work from home. Is there a simple way to claim 9 months of the allowance, as if you go through the online portal set up for this, about the third question is "did your employer pay you an allowance" and if you answer yes, then you can't go any further.

Just wondered if anyone had come across this situation before?

Many thanks

Nicola

Hi Nicola

Not had to do the claim myself but are you not trying to claim for a period when the Employer did not pay the expenses in which case surely the answer should be 'No' instead of yes

Th site says "You cannot claim tax relief on the costs of working from home if your employer has paid back your expenses or paid you an allowance to cover your expenses" Yes or No

Just as an aside why is the Employer not paying for the employees to work from home anymore?

Hi Doug,

I wasn't sure if you put no, would a claim for the whole year go in?

Because in July/August it was announced that we should be going back to work by the government, so I think the thinking was that most of the employees would return to work. But not many have for various reasons, the majority remain working from home and a few have asked how to claim.

Many thanks for the reply

Nicola
