Keeping paperwork

I have just made the first start towards a paperless office after finally buying the scanner I've been promising myself for years.  (See https://www.book-keepers.org.uk/t63351885/autoentry/?page=1

A couple of questions, should I simply return paperwork back to the client or destroy once scanned? (obviously ensure I am effectively keeping back ups.

Is there still a requirement to scan both sides re invoices and receipts?  (The majority of receipts don't have anything useful on the back)

Hi John,

I would return paperwork back to client.

Alternatively, you could offer to destroy paperwork but you would need to get a system in place to have them agree and sign off, use a licenced company to safely dispose as you are given a receipt.

One of my old customers was a digital storage company and they scanned EVERYTHING front and back..... if it had printed or written material on it, it was scanned as you can be sure that the customer will need what was on the back of a receipt or need to see the T&C`s often on the reverse of invoices ! .

(The majority of receipts don't have anything useful on the back) never assume always scan.

Hi John,

the paperwork belongs to the client and should always be returned to them (once they have paid).

All the best,

Shaun.
