SUBMITTING VAT RETURNS - is this a no go?

Hi Everyone, hope your all staying safe & getting through this crazy time for us all.

I have been trying to file one of my clients VAT returns (deadline today). usually do via ablewarton since bladdy MTD and was going fine (past 2 returns) however now its just error messages, plus on logging into HMRC its showing submit return as unavailable but still says you need to submit as usual but can defer payment.

Is anyone else struggling to file? Or is there an easy system that is allowing you to put through. I use excel & vt for this client usually so i just have the figures to input into the submission boxes. Any help would be great, I can't sleep if I miss deadlines.. dont laugh its actually true yawn

TIA x

Just a quick one - up against it!!!

What are you talking about woman? winkconfuse Is what a 'no go'?

Oh stop panicking Mr Mannering (you are probably too young for that) but when was the VAT deadline ever 5th. Its 7th! So plenty of time.

Not checked - but first of all, check if HMRC have any service issues (via their website) and also check if the API is working (I popped a link on here a while back....test to see if you can find it).

EXACTLY what VT software do you have. I mean EXACTLY.....if you say I can advise.

Or someone else might beat me to it. Im stopping to cook and eat. Then back to it.

Hi Shoncee

Q1   Is the VT you're using the subscription version or the former one time payment version.  If the former you can submit it via VT.

Q2  Can you not submit by Taxfiler if the latter, that's what I've done in the past.

haha!! i love your replies.

I meant are we not to submit during the big CV epi?

HMRC not working when I try this is what I can see. And usual ablewarton won't let me do either. So you think give it a go with tax filer ? VT software not sure exactly which one (its on my other laptop) but I paid a one off license for it?

thanks xx

Hi Shoncee

If you paid a one off licence for VT you can't do VAT submissions on it.

Assuming you have a VAT agent account, I would give it a go in Taxfiler.  It's a doddle once you get used to it.

I know, Im a cheeky mare! Some folk dont get my humour? Nor my (occasional !) say it as it is stance!

When I last checked - nothing showing at HMRC to say service issues. API was running fine yesterday.

BUT - where is that 2nd screen shot from? Is it from your old agent account? If so , it wont show as client is now in MTD, so it will only show in the MTD software. There may be other issues preventing a VAT period showing, but it sounds like it might be a software issue.

As John says, VT is not an option as you have it at the moment, BUT given your other post about doing final accounts I would recommend use of VT Final Accounts as a package for that which will also enabling filing at Companies House and then dropping direct as an iXBRL copy into any of the tax packages (Taxfiler for eg). It will also give you the access for filing MTD4VAT - if you process the bookkeeping via VT, or if you use excel, by using VT 'add in' process - which is essentially the bridging product. Its really easy. I had VT accounts before anyway, but now also use the add in function to bridge some clients with very old Sage 50 software/VAT returns in excel - all of them pay a portion of the VT fees.

Or you can use taxfiler as John suggests just on its own for bridging and for some accounts production (albeit it can be limited in some scenarios).

Do you have VAT agent status? Do you have MTD VAT Agent account?

On the Covid-19 regs for VAT - you MUST still file on time. The deferment is for payment only, albeit dependent on the period. If relying on the deferment, make sure client cancels the D/D NOW!
