Payroll Qualifications


The company I am working for would eventually like me to take over their payroll.

Whilst I can do basic payroll, I've only ever done payroll for companies with under 10 employees, plus it's all been very straight forward. This company has 30 employees and it is not straightforward. 

What would be the best training/qualification to undertake? - I have told them I won't take over until I have the right qualification, which they have said they are willing to pay for.

Another vote for CIPP, that's a course I'd love to do if someone else was paying! I've done IAB Computerised Payroll via distance learning and although I completed the course, never managed to sit the exam for l3 before they withdrew the course from my local college. Managed to complete levels 1 & 2 and Sage software was a must, strange to go back to using after years of alternative software. I suppose it would depend how in depth a course you want, how complicated are the payroll needs and how confident you are with payroll. Might be worth having a look at the different syllabus of each provider for a better idea of what they cover.

Just a thought, might have a suggestion but depends on a couple of things - who is doing the payroll now and what software do they use?

The accountants are doing the payroll, but coming on site to do it. Using Iris. They want to bring it in house because he insists on coming back twice a month to then sort out the PAYE/NI and Pension payments separately, thus costing them more money. Plus I can't access my computer when he is in. They are looking to extend my hours to cover it, but I did tell them I wasn't as confident in Payroll on a larger scale so would need to do a course.

The payroll is varied, with foreign workers, holidays, different contracts etc. Plus with there being a larger workforce, there is more scope for things like SPP, SMP & SSP, which I'm not confident in.

I will look into CIPP, so thanks for that suggestion.

Not sure why they would be in twice a month, I run our payroll 4 weekly and print any reports for ni/paye liabilities due to be paid that month and our pension contributions are paid monthly by direct debit. We used to use IRIS, moved to 12Pay to reduce costs and now use Brightpay.

If it helps our payroll is run for two sperate restaurants, average around 20 employees each at any time. Lots of starters/leavers, some salaried, some hourly, some with tips etc - basically lots of variation! I have had to deal with SSP mostly, once SPP, a couple of attachment orders. Trying to think what else? Pensions!

As I said I did the IAB courses which covered the above and a lot of other things like salary sacrifice and company savings which I've never had to deal with outside studying. It would also depend on how much time you would have for studying and which method suits you best.

Exactly that - no one knows why he comes in twice when he could just print off the figures for their HMRC liabilities at the time he does payroll.

 Thanks. I think doing a course is more for my own confidence that should something out of the norm occur I'll be able to handle it without having to google and panic lol.
