Weird computer issue

Wet to log in to my office PC remotely today and everything had gone, save for a few items on the desktop.  Tried to run a couple of programs but one reverted to day one of a trial version and the other didn't load. Also my onedrive files had all gone.  My conclusion was that somehow windows had re-installed itself, although it was working fine yesterday.

I went to system restore and there was a critical update at 5 pm so I clicked restore to take me just before that point.  Computer now tells me it couldn't do the system restore as I had malwayrebytes running but lo and behold everything is back to normal.  I can run my programs and onedrive is back.

Hi John,

Sounds like an issue that I occassionally get on one of my machines.

If file manager crashes then everything seems to disappear even though its still there on the hard drive.

switching the machine off and on again generally fixes it.

I'm pretty sure that the initial problem on mine was caused by a "helpful" anti virus program trying to win brownie points removing stuff that it thought that I didn't need from the windows registry.

Could have been something as simple as a background update being applied whilst you were attempting to access it

Fingers crossed that yours was an isolated incident and all fixed now.

All the best,

Shaun.

Hi Shaun

That would certainly explain it although I've never had that happen before.  I never thought to look what was showing in the c drive users file. I just opened file explorer, saw that onedrive had disappeared and went straight to system restore.

Thanks matey

I had something similar about a year or so ago, I turned on my computer and like you every thing had gone which really worried me as although I had backed everything up it would have been a nightmare trying to restore it all, I spoke to my brother in law who knows a bit about computers (I am totally useless) and he said that maybe windows were doing an update and to just leave it.

Switched it on the next day and everything was back to normal so whether it was an update or not I still do not know but thankfully all turned out okay and panic was over, your post does remind me though that I was going to review my back up policy to make sure that I can restore everything in a more efficient and orderly manor if something like that happened again and the data could not be retrieved.

Hi Doug

Bring back Windows ME that's all I can say biggrinbiggrin

To those not in the know Windows ME was the worst operating system ever in my opinion.  My favourite was Windows 98 SE, now that was the dogs wotsits.  That said I don't mind Windows 10 at all.

Lol Shaun.

Although it was short lived, I didn't find Vista that bad, although Windows 7 was a vast improvement (my second favourite)

Incidentally, is that Mike Walling?  (played Eric in Brush Strokes) It certainly reminds me of him.

 Hi John

It does look like him

I used to love Brush Strokes so just googled it and quite amazed that it first showed in 1986, wow I did not think it was that long ago, I was 18 disbelief

Hi Doug.

Brush Strokes was one of my favourite comedy programs at the time.  I've noticed some of the episodes are on youtube so I will certainly watch the first series again.  Did you ever watch Watching?  That was my all time favourite.

 Hi John,

Couldn't place the name 'Watching' so clicked on it and definitely remember all the faces so must of been watching it.

Some others that I remember but all a bit later than that was, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Game On and Goodnight Sweetheart those were all great

Yes Goodnight Sweetheart was brilliant, it's a shame they didn't do another series when they did the update a few years ago.
