Vat - urgent query

I've got VAT agent status, but not for this client.

They can't file their VAT return, which states there is no return due when they log on, despite a return being due every 31October since forever.

Can I file using my agent login account?

I don't think I can but not at home to check it out.

Deadline tomoz (well today now!)

Someone suggested it's cos they signed up for MTD pilot.... I don't think so.

Hi Joanne

As far as I am aware you need to go through the authorisation process for VAT for your client to enable them to show on your VAT client list and then be able to submit their tax return which is meant to take 10 days but seems to be taking a lot longer

There is a post on Aweb about others having similar problems with their VAT returns

https://www.accountingweb.co.uk/any-answers/hmrc-mtd-pilot-warning-generic

Maybe worth getting your client to ring HMRC (they wont speak to you as you are not authorised to act for your client for VAT) and getting a case raised with a reference number to fall back on if the return is filed late and penalties imposed, they will have this to show as proof, also take screenshots.

Hi Doug
I went on their account and could see that message that is referred to in your link. As far as I can see it actually relates to an 'address issue' (had this before with another client a while back). Great way to stay out of the VAT system!!!! Bloody stupid system if you ask me!

Am going to try to get client to call....that in itself will be a miracle.

Just to make matters worse, one of the Directors has many businesses and that Accountant has said in an email to all '' although I think youve left things a bit late for filing the Return'' (wonder if he wants the work! He can bloody have it!) - I only finished the VAT return at ungodly o'clock 5 December, due to not getting the required info from client, filing was attempted 7pm last night....... now he is seeming to suggest it cannot be done at that time, which is blatantly not true. So a wee bit annoyed right now.

Thanks for the link. Screen shots of the attempt to file kept, although undated! (I need to find Lion's other comment and keep that methinks). Thanks for thre reminder about the case number as well, good shout!

What a palaver.

This was an address related issue - the post code was missing!!!!!!!!!

As you can imagine, even with secret id thingymys, he went round the houses trying to id himself as he couldnt confirm the postcode to match their records! How moronic are these people.

This was completely caused by HMRC and problems with their system which knocked off the customer's postcode. Its a known fault, just one that they clearly couldnt be arsed telling people about on their service availability pages, which I checked yesterday, because as we know the service availability pages are just there to leave blank arent they. Bunch of bloody useless T****.

Now though, its managed to naff up their D/D, payments and lodging the VAT. Customer has to wait until the next VAT return and file a 6month one and make sure they do not spend the dosh. HMRC positively said not to pay it now (fear of it disappearing into the ether has meant client wont pay it now!).

But we have a case ref!

Thanks again Doug.

Wonder if I can start my day again.

And do retain this forum thread as evidence of your actions, in the event that HMRC charge a Default Surcharge in the next 18 months.

Hi Joanne, glad you got it sorted (my quest on my authorisation codes post still continues with no news from HMRC)

I think you should call it a day, put your feet up and pour yourself a large one, because that is what I will be doing very soon biggrin

Always cautious about abuse directed at HMRC, Joanne! A row of astericks is always a give-away!
