Starting own business

Good afternoon,

I have recently received an HND in Accountancy at college and I am looking into starting my own business. Now, my problem is I dont know where to start!!! I have found some institutions online and also AAT site which has gave me various memberships and qualifications. I am wondering if I should go for the AAT level 4 adavanced level. Do I need this to go into my own business??? I am intr into getting the professional letters after my name.

 Hi V gilmartin

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your HND

Not sure exactly what was covered by your previous course but I would always recommend AAT, their have been quite a number of posts on here recently about different courses and what levels to do so it might be worth going back and having a read through some of these.

What are you doing at the moment are you working in Accounting/Finance?

Cheers Doug

Good morning Doug, Thanks for your reply. I have just received an email from one of my lecturers saying the AAT course would not be worth doing as that is the equivalent to a HNC (which I've passed). At the moment I am volunteering and working as a bookkeeper part time (this is a self employed status) Thanks again Viv

 Morning Viv

When you say volunteering and working as a bookkeeper is this the same job?

If you are working on a self-employed basis you have to make sure that you have MLR in place as a must and I would also recommend taking out some PII to cover you just in case.

In your opening post you say that you want to open your own business but if you are actually working as a self-employed bookkeeper then in effect you have already started.

What sort of accounting services are you thinking of offering or are you just going to stick to bookkeeping?

Cheers

Doug, The volunteering and work is two separate places.

Sorry, posted before finishing. I am looking into doing payroll services as well. Bookkeeping including income statements and statements of financial income.

Hi Viv

Doug has asked the question are you covered under Money Laundering Regulations (MLR)?  You can't do self employed bookkeeping unless you are.

Apart from that best wishes with developing your business.
