I am on the finance committee for a football club (it isn't Manchester City before you get excited) and we are looking for some one who wants to get some experience of payroll, but we cant, as a club, afford to pay very much!  

The work would be checked by the FD/myself, but we haven't the time to do it ourselves, so it would be ideal for student or someone recently qualified in payroll who wants to get some experience and and something to put on their CV.

What system do they use and roughly how long did it take the previous clerk?

This is a new payroll scheme.  Previously the players were amateurs, however, do to recent success a number of players are now being paid more than we can justify with expenses so we are putting them onto a PAYE scheme.
