Does a dentist need to register for VAT

A dental contractor earning in excess of £140k a year - do they need to register for VAT?

Isn't there anything on the HMRC Website regarding Dentists and Vat?

Well, reading from the website, I can see that Dentists are exempt from VAT,

However, under section701/57 10.1 - there is also mention of dentists being charged at the standard rate for VAT if self-employed.... therefore am confused as to which one is correct

NA, my reading of the self employed paragraph is where the dentist is supplying advisory services.... on clinical governance etc. EG. not extracting or filling teeth.

Is your dentist doing this?

regards,
Tim

I believe the dentists contract is to provide services to clients of the dental practice by extracting teeth, filing teeth etc

So he's exempt and he could be turning over 1.4 million, yet he still wouldn't have to register unless there were VATable supplies of over the registration threshold within that amount.

If there are no VATable supplies whatsoever, then I don't know of any advantage in being voluntarily registered either.

If he's only making exempt supplies, then he can't register for VAT - voluntarily or otherwise biggrin

Hey, this information is good. I also have just joined the << link removed >> as the assistant but was quite curious to know all this. This information provided here is very good and to confirm the recent rules, I am going to talk to the dentist himself. Will definitely share the info here.

Will be interesting to hear that VAT advice from the dentist in California! I am waiting with baited breath.

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
