1 company - 2 names???

Don't know where to post this sorry. And not sure if its even a question for this forum but just need a bit of advice.

I have been ringing companies for quotes for a particular job and I found two different websites and business names but with the same contact details and address. Both do the same type of work but the company seems to be going under two names.

Is this a company to steer clear from?

I know of companies under single ownership that perform different services so are kept completely separate but multiple companies doing the same thing does ring warning bells.

The company number(s) will be on the website. Use that to check them out through the companies house website.

The alternatives here that I can see (there will be others) are :

It could be that company A has taken over company B but wants to keep both names as both have good client bases. That would be the best case scenario as far as I can see.

Alternatively, it may be that one of the companies is legitimate and the other website is a scam using legitimate contact details to give it some credence. Of course, that would only work if you had to give your own details on the site or make a payment.

Hiya
There may also be genuine commercial reasons for keeping two companies separate. As Shamus mentioned it may be as a result of a merger or take over or I know of cases where companies have products for different client bases ie more deluxe products to one market and a cheaper line for another market

always worth a check on Companies House to see if they are of good standing

Could be strategic i.e. two businesses operating in different markets.

We have 3 companies all offering the same services but we seperate them out due to funding from seperate people, it makes it easier to account for the money and where it gets spent.

for the sake of a few ££'s you can get the relevant reports from companies house to find out about the company. just register and pay using a card and within an hour or 2 you can down load them.

Or just ring each up and ask them directly.
