Register for VAT


Hi All

I am a little confused, do I have to be VAT registered to submit client VAT Returns online, can anyone help?

You do not need to be registered for vat if you are submitting returns for clients. You have to be registered for MLR9 though.

I think if you use your client's log in details then there will be no problem with you doing it on their behalf.

Might be a wise idea also to get them to sign the figures if they aren't going to be physically present with you when using their log in details.

Are you registered as an Agent with HMRC? You can request a client authorisation code which is sent to the client and when they give you it to enter, you are then authorised to file on their behalf. You dont have to be VAT registered to do that.

We have registered as an agent but do not use it to file returns but just use the company logons, seeing as we set the logon up for them.
