Choosing a business name

I'm waiting on my ICB level 2 results and as I have a lot of practical experience I'm looking to starting to work for myself whilst in full time employment and see where it takes me.

I'm going to start as a sole trader with a view to going limited if it takes off a bit.

The trouble is I am really struggling to come up with a name and I'm now wondering if I need a "clever" name at all!! Whats everyone else called their businesses and why did you call it that? I'm not wanting to pinch anyones ideas I have a couple of my own, just after some inspiration!!

I was going to call myself TH Bookkeeping (TH are my initials) but then decided to got with A1 Bookkeeping after getting some good advice. In the bookkeeping section of the phone books, my business will always be one of the first. TH would have been one of the last entries.

I also thought about Terri Homyard Bookkeeping Services or T Homyard Services but then I figured that A1 Bookkeeping sounds like it could be a business name as well as a sole trader and should in the future, I want to branch out and take on staff, then I wont have to change my business name.

One thing that I would say is to look on Yell.com for bookkeepers in your area, you might get some inspiration and also you can check to make sure that you aren't going to choose a name that is already being used.

Good luck picking your name, have fun with it and let us know when you have decided

Terri

SW Book-keeping Services Ltd and Sarah Wilson Book-keeping Services Ltd are both currently not being used on Companies House.

Thanks for checking that, I'm in two minds really about a name!! I keep seeing people who've got clever business names like a guy who fixed our boilers company was called Combi-Nation and wishing I could think of one but SW Bookkeeping services does do what it says on the tin. Its a dilemma, i suppose when I'm a millionaire I can say that SW there on that skyscraper thats me that is!!!

I love the clever names that people choose, I used to pass by a hairdresses a lot and that was called Hair Force One. I always used to giggle to myself when I saw it.

I do as well thats why its so annoying I can't think of one!! Theres a hairdressers near me called Curl Up and Dye that always amuses me.

SW Bookkeeping services is good but I was hoping to think of something devastatingly clever where people would go aaaaah when I said it. Hey ho such is lifebiggrin

Hi

The advise I was given when I set up my bookkeeping business was to choose a name which did not include your initials or your own name, as if you want to sell the business in years to come it is better they are not based on your own personal details.

How about "A Star Book-keeping Ltd" or "The Calculating Book-keepers Ltd", both currently free on Companies House  or even "Fingers & Thumbs Book-keeping Services"
