VAT on Credit Card Sales fee passed to customers

Hi there, can anyone advise me on how to treat the addition fee added to a retail credit card sale to cover merchant charges.  Would this be exempt from VAT?
Thanks Mary

Hi Mary,

the issue of VAT on credit card sales merchant fees has just been lost  in a big case taken by Debenhams - it was deemed that the whole of the purchase price was undertaken in a single contract with Debenhams and therefore the price of the goods and the merchant fee were not two separate transactions and as such the whole transaction was subject to a single rate of VAT

hope this make sense

Gemma
