Importing books from the US

My client has started importing books from the US. Not in bulk mind just the odd one here and there to sell with his other products. When it comes to completing his VAT return do I include these purchases on the return and if so in which boxes?

When you pay VAT on an import, its really like buying from a UK supplier and has to be treated as such on the VAT return.

I seem to remember you have to get a certificate from HMRC but i'm not 100% sure.

Hopefully someone else on the forum will be able to guide you.

Nigel.

Hi Joe,

In order to reclaim the import VAT you need an import VAT certificate C79 from HMRC. HMRC will send your client this form based on the information on the import declaration.

Your client can then reclaim the import VAT on the next return.

Fay
