CIMA and AAT

Hi there everyone

I am new to the forum and am thinking of setting up my own business. I wandered if anyone could advise me on qualifications. I have over ten years practical experience of book keeping and management accounting including building financial models etc using various systems. I have a degree in business studies and finance which gives me six exemptions form CIMA, i.e. the certificate stage and one paper from the professional stage. I have looked at AAT but I think I am exempt a lot of this, so was wandering whether to start CIMA or whether I would need some ICB qualifications? Or indeed if I need to do any at all to still have a credibility to potential clients?

Hi Angelan,
Hi & Welcome to the Forum. Looking at your Qualifications which are impressive, here is something that you may wish to consider. If you are looking to set up your own Business you already have qualifications and experience which goes a long way.
Have a look at the Institute Of Financial Accountants as I see it you already have exemptions from most if not all of their Technician Level. IMHO as I see it with your degree you would be able to enter at Associate Level I have enclosed a link for you.

You could also look at the IAB as well if you are looking to hone your Book-keeping skills, the IAB is a sister Orginisation of the IFA.

Regarding Qualifications it is good to have them as it does show potential clients that you are competent (biggrin.gif well in theory that is!) but without any it is no barrier. But from what you have said you have Qualifications anyway. I would be interested in what area of Business you are thinking of developing...

Thanks thats really useful, I think I need to go away and do some more research before deciding which route will suit me best and is the easiest to fit round two toddlers!!
